Proper Garbage Disposal: Your Ticket to Going Green

Who doesn’t want to go green these days? I know that I do. I want to do my share in saving our dear mother earth because this is the only planet we’ve got. So, how does proper garbage disposal help in going green? I guess the answer is fairly simple. Let me share with you valuable thoughts that will surely convince you that proper garbage disposal is indeed a worthwhile undertaking.

Are you aware that there is an estimated five million people who die from improper waste disposal-related diseases, on a yearly basis? According to a research conducted by the United Nations Development Programme, these numbers are even going higher. It simply means that there is more garbage that is being improperly disposed each year. It is a sad reality that developed countries hold more of the garbage of the world. In the U.S. alone, each individual gather about three quarters of a ton of garbage. But this is no reason to lose hope because with proper waste management, this number can be greatly reduced.

It doesn’t come easy though to commit to a sensible individual waste management program. But by following the mantra of proper garbage disposal, you can easily achieve success: reduce, reuse and recycle.

To reduce your household garbage, you need to evaluate the way you buy food. Packaging plays a very important role in reducing your household waste. Instead of buying pre-packed vegetables or fruits, why not opt for loose products. This way, you don’t buy the styropore or plastic that goes with the packaging.
Another way to reduce your household waste is by planning regular appliance maintenance. This will allow your old appliance to get in tip top shape through regular cleaning and repair. You don’t only help save the planet; you also help yourself save on cost of buying new ones on a regular basis.

Donating old appliances that still work and in good condition will serve double purpose: you do your share in charity and you help reduce garbage. It has also been noticeable that a lot of department stores and well-known shops have come up with their own version of reusable bags. So, the next time you go shopping, grab one or two of those reusable bags instead of using paper or plastic bags. And lastly, be conscious to use reusable cups, plates and utensils instead of buying disposable items.

This is probably the most challenging of the three tasks because it may involve not only a lot of new stuff like garbage cans, but it can also be very taxing. It is a paradigm shift altogether because you will exert extra effort to be conscious of knowing what can be recycled and what are those that are totally non-biodegradable.

One of the most basic recycling methods is composting. All organic food waste can be converted to compost that will not only help the environment, but will definitely help the plants grow healthier. There are a lot of references over the net on how to do proper composting. All you need to do is research on the subject.

You also need to be on the lookout for various recycling centers in your community. Plastics, papers, cardboards, cans, tin cans, and bottles are all materials than can be recycled. And I’m almost sure that any recycling center will receive them with gladness.

Now that we have discussed the value of proper garbage disposal, I hope that everyone who read this article will take extra effort to practice the three important words: reduce, reuse and recycle. By taking them to heart, you are on your way to a successful waste management program.
